Homemade Mixed Herbs
A jar of mixed herbs is one of those simple seasonings that’s surprisingly useful to have in the pantry. Rather than reaching for several different jars every time you’re cooking, this blend brings together basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme and chives in one easy mix.
It works particularly well in the sort of everyday meals where you want a little extra flavour without one herb taking over. Sprinkle it into soups and casseroles, add it to sauces, use it over roast vegetables or stir it through savoury baking. Because all the ingredients are dried, it also takes only a few minutes to put together.
This recipe makes around 1½ cups, so you’ll have plenty ready to use. However, it’s very easy to halve the quantities if you’d prefer to make a smaller jar.

Stacey’s Kitchen Tips
- Make sure all of your herbs are completely dry before mixing, particularly if you’ve dried them yourself.
- Use a clean, dry jar to prevent moisture getting into the mixture.
- Give the jar a quick shake before using, as the finer herbs can settle towards the bottom.
- If your rosemary pieces are particularly large, you can crush them lightly before adding them to the blend.
- Label the jar with the date so you can keep track of how long it has been in the pantry.
Variations & Substitutions
- Add dried oregano if you’d like a slightly stronger Mediterranean-style flavour.
- Add dried marjoram for another layer of flavour.
- Adjust the proportions depending on the herbs you use most often.
- Make a half batch if you’d prefer a smaller quantity.
Storage, Freezer & Make-Ahead Notes
Store your mixed herbs in a clean, dry airtight jar in a cool, dark pantry away from heat and direct sunlight.
The blend will keep for several months, although dried herbs gradually lose their flavour and aroma over time. For the best results, use herbs that are reasonably fresh when making the mixture.
There’s no need to refrigerate or freeze the blend. Keeping moisture out of the jar is much more important for maintaining its quality.
Final Thoughts
Making your own mixed herbs isn’t complicated—in fact, it barely feels like a recipe—but that’s exactly why it’s such a useful pantry staple. Once you’ve measured everything into a jar, you’ve got one seasoning blend ready to grab whenever dinner needs a little extra flavour.
It’s also a good way to make use of herbs you’ve grown and dried yourself. Even if you’re using supermarket dried herbs, combining them yourself means you can adjust the blend over time until it suits the way your family cooks.
Simple recipes like this are exactly what The Home Pantry – Volume One is about: everyday staples that are easy to make and useful to keep on hand.
