How to make freezer Garlic Pucks
Why make your own?
How to make freezer garlic pucks is such an easy and simple process. Throw away those glass jars of garlic and try this!
The store-bought glass jars of garlic have preservatives and other nasty ingredients. I love to have these little pucks of garlicky goodness in my freezer because they are so convenient, and I know exactly what has gone into it.
I also love that I can use my home-grown garlic as well. It is a great way to use up any tiny bulbs you may have grown, that won’t keep long in storage. No more wasted garlic bulbs.
What you need to make your own garlic pucks
- A blender or processor
- Garlic cloves
- Good quality oil
- Salt
- A tray that can go in the freezer
- Ziplock Bags or Silicone bags
How to make freezer garlic pucks
If you don’t grow your own garlic, you can buy packets of peeled garlic at most fruit and vegetable shops. Yes, there is some controversy on the China grown garlic, but I suggest you do your own research and find what you are most happy with. I would suggest that most of the jarred crushed garlic is made from the same grown garlic.
Put all the peeled garlic cloves into your food processer or blender and add around 3 tbsp of a good quality oil. I use cold pressed Sunflower oil from The Good Oil NZ. I absolutely love this oil and highly recommend it.
Pulse the garlic until it comes together but is not turned into a paste. Add more oil if the garlic is not coming together and also add the pinch of salt now.
How to freeze your pucks
Once the garlic has come together get your tray lined with either baking paper or a silicone mat. I like to use one like THIS. Spoon heaped teaspoon sized pucks onto the mat until all the garlic is used.
Cover the garlic with plastic wrap unless you don’t mind the smell of garlic in your freezer. Place the garlic trays into the freezer until the pucks are frozen. You can now take them off the trays and place them all into a zip lock freezer bag or you can use silicone freezer bags. I have ones like THESE
Now what?
The frozen garlic pucks are now ready to use anytime you need garlic. It is convenient to use, and I promise you it will save you money on buying those garlic jars. I also use the same method for bulk tomato paste, ginger and curry pastes.
My family don’t enjoy curries, but I love them so instead of wasting jars of half used curry paste I now have frozen pucks to use whenever I feel like a curry.
