Making homemade dairy-free sweetened condensed milk

After the success of my first YouTube video about making Easy Sweetened Condensed Milk in under Five Minutes! I thought it would be good to follow up with so many questions that was asked in the comment section.

Many viewers wanted to know if they could make it dairy-free or vegan. So of course I set about trying it and it was a great success. Over here in New Zealand, I haven’t seen a dairy-free option in the supermarkets. I am sure there will be some options out there somewhere but i haven’t seen it.

The first batch I made I used coconut milk and it was lovely. You will have to lightly simmer on low for around 20 minutes. If you use either coconut milk or regular plain dairy milk. Just follow the below recipe for measurements.

I also recently used coconut cream and that was even better and much faster. It is already a thicker liquid and didn’t need to be simmered for long at all.

Typically the sugar-to-fluid ratio is two to one but the can of coconut cream I brought was 400 ml. So I used that and it worked out just as well. This yielded 520 grams of finished sweetened condensed milk.

a bowl of dairy-free sweetened condensed milk on a wooden board with a can of coconut cream next to it. It is running off a spoon and is thick in consistency

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar (I also tried 3/4 cup of sugar if you want to use less. It worked out just as well)
  • 400 ml Coconut Cream
  • pinch of salt

You could try to use other types of dairy-free milk. I haven’t yet tried it but I cant see why it would not work with others.

Another common question in the original video and recipe. Can you use skimmed milk in the milk powder version I don’t see why not.

Method

  • Place the sugar and coconut cream in a saucepan on low heat and bring to a simmer.
  • Do not let the mix burn. You have to stir the whole time to keep it from catching on the bottom of the saucepan
  • .You can put the heat up but again just be careful not to let it catch. You just want the sugar to be all dissolved.
  • Once it comes to a simmer remove from heat.
  • Place the condensed milk in a container or jar and let it cool before placing on the lid. It can be kept in the refrigerator for several months.

The milk-to-sugar ratio is two to one. However, you can get away with using less milk but just know it will be sweeter.
